IMPROVISATION FOR THE THEATER
—Improv/Acting Training with Gary Schwartz

Monday Evenings 7:30-9:30 pm
at Valley Center Stage 119 E. North Bend Way, North Bend
to start upon minimum enrollment of 8 players. February - March

 Spontaneity * Awareness * Transformation

Theater Games are the foundation of Improvisation and play is at the core of all theater. There are games to free the actor’s tension, games to cleanse the actor of subjective preconceptions of the meaning of words, games of relationship and character, games of concentration - in short, games for each of the areas with which the growing actor is concerned.

The ability to play is ours from birth. We lose the connection for play in many ways as we make our way through life. Play is essential! It fosters connection, inspiration, cooperation and acting skills -- and it is easy to do.

This workshop is open to all. Work in a fun and playful class, and connect with your real talents for spontaneous play and real connection between you and your fellow players. It’s great for beginners and accomplished actor alike. These skills will help you access and refine your natural talents for the stage and beyond.

Cost: $175 for seven weeks - to start upon minimum enrollment of 8 players. February 16th -March 30th 2009

Acting/Improv for kids  - ages 9-11   Thursday afternoons 4:00 to 5:00 PM
Maple Valley Creative Arts Center

Every child is brilliant in his or her own way. Theater Games motivate children to think in new ways and move in new directions to explore their relation to each other, themselves and their environment. Playing theater games helps to draw out the natural intelligence and humor inherent in each student, creating opportunities to explore their unique abilities and explore their own treasure house of creativity.
This inspires an “I can!” attitude that stays with them long after they’ve left the stage.
The Class will be made up of Theater Games and will introduce young actors to our weekly ongoing Tuesday after-school workshop.

Classes can be attended by parents as well and if you decide to stay, you may be asked to play!
Cost: $100 (8 weeks) (class begins when enrollment reaches 10 students - email gary@valleycenterstage.org for status of this class)
Audits and Drop-ins per class $15.00

Young Actor’s Workshop for ages 12-14

Maple Valley Creative Arts Center, 23220 Maple Valley Hwy. Maple Valley, WA 98038

Gary Schwartz, director of the Valley Center Stage is offering a new Young Actor’s Class for ages 11-13

Class goals:  Spolin Theater Games are a fun way to develop improv performance skills and new ways of working on scripted material. Through playing, an energy source opens up between people.

Acting for the theater evolves naturally out of playing. Recognizing this source of energy, famed educator/director/teacher Viola Spolin (regarded as the mother of American improvisation) applied the game form to theater disciplines and arrived at her widely acclaimed Spolin Theater Games technique. This class will introduce children to games that will give them the ability work as a group on stage as well as introduce them to the building blocks of improv, ensemble work (group agreement) who (relationships, occupations etc.), what (the action of scenes) and where (locations of scenes). As we get familiar with stage techniques, we will work on story theater scripts and work towards producing small mini-plays in the form of Story Theater.

Cost: $125 for eight weeks. Class subject to sufficient enrollment (10 students) email gary@valleycenterstage.org for status of this class)
